Recap of the Panthers and Smith in 2008
The Panthers had it all clicking until they ran into the Arizona Cardinals in their first contest in the playoffs. Steve Smith was focused and motivated after his suspension for punching team mate Ken Lucas in pre-season. Compiling 1421 yards with a 18.2 yards per catch in 14 games. Unfortunately Smith only had 6 touchdowns last year.
Although quarterback Jake Delhomme had a total melt down in the playoffs look for a rebound in 09. Remember Delhomme was coming off of Tommy John surgery on his throwing arm and that surgery takes two years to recover from. Bottom line here is that Jake loves to get the ball to Steve and looks his way often so another year of solid production is to be expected
Steve Smith's Fantasy Value in 2009
Look for Steve to get off to a hot start for Carolina this year. Jake Delhomme will be looking to show that he is still capable of running the show for the Panthers. Best way to prove it is to get the ball in Steve Smith's hands and let him go. Smith's game breaking skills are still well in tact as I see him improving on his 6 touchdowns from a year ago. One problem I do see with Steve is that he tends to have problems playing an entire 16 games a year always missing 1 or 2 from injury or suspension. Look for Smith as a solid #1 receiver for your fantasy football team.
Fantasy Assets:
- Game Breaker
- Explosive
- Good Offense Around him
- Plays in good weather
Fantasy Liability's:
- Needs to play a full 16 games
- Keep attitude in check
