Keep Him on the Sidelines in 2009 Please!
Stafford was the top pick in the 2009 NFL draft this April. He went to the 0-16 Detroit Lions. Now there is some talent in the Lions' offense like Calvin Johnson, Kevin Smith and fellow 2009 first round tight end Brandon Pettigrew, these players willno doubt help Matt out. However, there is a reason a franchise goes to 0-16 for the first time in NFL history.
That is because for 1 the Lions defense was horrible and two they had a bad offensive line. With veteran quarterback Daunte Culpepper on the team Matt has a chance to sit back and learn for a season.
This will also give the new coaching staff time to work with his offensive line and get things corrected. If the Lions do, in fact, sit Stafford for a season in 2010, he will be able to understand the pro level speed better and make better decisions with the football. Plus hopefully have more time to pass as the O-line comes together. Right now if he starts, he would hold the ball too long and defenders will kill him.
Matthew Stafford Fantasy Football Value in 2009
Matt's situation is completely different than that of Mark Sanchez or Josh Freeman. He is on a much worse team. Plus the Buccaneers (Freeman's team) and the Jets (Sanchez's team) both have excellent offensive lines for protection. I don't want to sound like I'm a Stafford hater, but I hope he has zero fantasy value in 2009. Please let this kid have a fighting chance and give him a year to learn the NFL before he starts with this bad franchise (as of now anyway).
If he should make the starting role at some point then he will be a backup fantasy quarterback in deep leagues. In the end while he would struggle with bad play this year he does have talented ball catchers around him.
