That was a Surprise!
The Raiders had the 7th overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft and many thought when Michael Crabtree was available that Oakand would select him. Why shouldn't they as after all Crabtree was a two time Fred Biletnikoff award winner (only receiver in college history to accomplish this award twice). Biletnikoff is a NFL Hall of Famer and played for the Raiders for those of you that don't know.

But Oakland choose another path and shocked the football world by taking receiver Darrious Heyward-Bey instead. In a way this pick made sense as the Raiders do love to draft players will all the measurable. Heyward-Bey clearly has those with his 6'2, 210 pound frame and a 4.3, 40 yard dash time. So far hearing interviews with the guy on Bay Area radio Darrious seem like a nice guy as well. That is truly something you can not say about receivers in the NFL all the time. Then again Terrell Owens was a really nice guy before he was a super star with the 49ers, so who knows if Bey will stay a nice guy.

Unfortunately for Oakland Michael Crabtree landed in San Fransisco which is only just across the bay. If Darrious does not work out, this pick could haunt the Raiders for a very long time. The worst place Crabtree could have landed was in their division or to the 49ers.

Darrious Heyward-Bey's Fantasy Football Value in 2009
So far in camp it looks like Bey is off to a good start for the Raiders. Oakland also was smart in signing free agent quarterback Jeff Garcia to back up JaMarcus Russell. Garcia doesn't have the big arm like Russell, but he has always been good about finding his play-makers. Hayward should get the nod to start and once this happens I can easily see a 750 yard, 5 touchdown year. Do not expect more than that in year one for this rookie as he is still a raw talent in many ways. Look to draft Darrious as a late round pick and use him during your bye weeks. With size and speed like his you may hit pay dirt on the bye weeks and get a 75 yard touchdown from the rookie.
