Roethlisberger Loses More Offensive Line
The 2008 Steelers were the Super Bowl Champions but mainly because they had the best conservative offense in the AFC. Notice that I used the word conservative when describing their offense. That is because the loss of left guard Alan Fanica made a noticeable impact on Big Ben and the running games' ability to succeed. Sure they still won a title but Ben dropped his touchdown totals from 32 to 17! Not to also add he through the ball more this year (65 more passes) than in 2007. This clearly shows the Steelers offense wasn't effective in 2008 for fantasy football. This decrease hurt many a fantasy owner because after such a solid 2007 campaign Steeler players like Big Ben and Santonio Holmes were high picks for teams.
If losing the likes of Alan Fanica wasn't enough last year the Steelers again lost two more of their linemen this off-season as well. With this information in mind one has to wonder just how many linemen can Pittsburgh lose before Rothlessburger goes down with a season ending injury. Just before the playoffs started Big Ben was carted off the field in week 17 because he got turned into a "roethlir sandwich" with defenders for bread. How soon will that happen this year?

#7 still has a very solid supporting cast in Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes and Heath Miller. However, soon the tool will be had for losing so many offensive linemen. Look for Ben to be beat-in up even more than last year. As they say his name is "Big Ben" and to me that means, "the bigger they are the harder they fall." With only 17 touchdowns a year ago one can't be happy with his prospects of improving with less time than ever before to throw the football. In the end, I don't see Roethlisberger holding up all year, and I also think this will be a down year for the Steelers.
I would suggest staying away from Ben in 2009 for fantasy football. However, if you must have this guy (admit it, you're a Steelers fan) I suggest you grab him in the later rounds. If, in fact, I'm wrong about his protection situation you will have a steal of a pick drafting him so late. If, in fact, I'm correct about Ben, a least you did not pay very much for him anyway.
Fantasy Assets:
- Great Receiving Core
- Good Team (Might not be this year)
- Play Maker
Fantasy Liability's:
- Lack of Touchdowns (only 17 in 2008)
- Strong signs of a bad offensive line this year
- Plays in a cold weather area
